Do I need a license to rent a scooter in Bali?

Short answerTo ride legally you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle endorsement, carried together with your home motorcycle licence. Rental shops will happily hand you a scooter without checking, but that does not make it legal - and in 2026 the gap matters more than it used to, because police checkpoints, on-the-spot fines and, most importantly, voided travel insurance all hinge on that document.

What "legal" actually requires

A car licence is not enough for a 125cc scooter - the IDP needs the motorcycle class, and it only works alongside the matching licence from home (bali.com, Short Stay Bali). You get an IDP in your home country before you travel; it is cheap and takes minutes. At a checkpoint police ask for the vehicle registration (STNK, given to you by the rental), your national licence and the IDP.

What it costs to skip it
