Bali Q&A

Can you drink tap water in Bali?

Short answerNo. Tap water in Bali is not reliably treated and can carry bacteria and parasites your gut has never met. Drink bottled, refilled-gallon or properly filtered water only. The nuance most guides skip: restaurant ice is almost always fine (it is factory-made from treated water), and brushing your teeth with tap water is low-risk for healthy adults - though plenty of careful travellers use bottled water even for that.

The protocol that works

Drink only sealed bottled water or water from the big blue refill gallons (every villa and guesthouse has one - refills cost about 20,000-25,000 IDR and save a mountain of plastic). Coffee and tea are fine: the water is boiled. Restaurant and bar ice in tourist areas is commercially produced tube ice under health regulation - the cylindrical kind with a hole (bali.com, Finns). Cloudy hand-crushed ice from an unknown street cart is the one to skip.

Brushing teeth, showers, salads

Brushing with tap water and spitting is low-risk for healthy adults; children, pregnant women and anyone immune-compromised should use bottled (Bali Villa Hub). Showers are a non-issue - just do not gulp. Salads and cut fruit in reputable cafes are washed in treated water; the wellness-cafe scene lives on raw bowls and would not survive poisoning its regulars. At street level, choose cooked and busy.

If you slip up

One accidental glass is usually nothing - most stomachs handle a small exposure fine. If your gut does rebel a day or two later, that is the classic onset of Bali belly; hydration and rest fix most cases in 48 hours. We wrote the full playbook in how to avoid Bali belly.
