Is Canggu safe at night?

Short answerYes - Canggu is generally safe at night, including for solo female travellers. Violent crime against tourists is rare here. The two risks that actually put people in clinics are traffic (walking on dark, pavement-free lanes) and opportunistic theft, mostly phone and bag snatching from passing scooters on quiet roads. Treat the roads with more respect than the people and you will be fine.

What the real risks are

Canggu's night problem is infrastructure, not crime. Many lanes have no streetlights and no sidewalk, and scooters share them with pedestrians. Most incidents reported by travellers are bag or phone snatches by a passing scooter on quieter stretches (Padonan, back lanes toward Pererenan, the shortcuts between Batu Bolong and Berawa), which mirrors what safety guides for the area report (Bali Res Centre, Travel Ladies). Keep the phone in a zipped pocket on the road side away from traffic and the problem mostly disappears.

Practical rules that locals actually follow

After midnight, take a Grab or Gojek instead of walking dark lanes - rides inside Canggu cost 15,000-40,000 IDR and arrive in minutes. Skip unmarked shortcut alleys, keep valuables off the outside of your body, and if you drink, stick to venues you know: cheap free-pour spirits are the one nightlife risk worth taking seriously anywhere in Bali. None of this is Canggu-specific fear - it is the same list you would give a friend for any beach town with scooter traffic.

The honest "it depends"

Safe does not mean supervised. Streets empty out after the bars close, police presence at night is light, and if you ride a scooter home the biggest danger in Canggu is you on that scooter (see our answer on riding scooters in Bali). Solo women we know here walk the main strips at night without drama, and still use rides for anything dark or unfamiliar - that combination is the honest answer.
