Bali Q&A

How many days do you need in Bali?

Short answerFor a first trip, seven to ten days is the honest sweet spot - enough for a beach base plus a few days in Ubud without living in the car. Five days is doable if you pick one region and barely move. Under five and Bali's traffic eats your holiday. Staying a month or more? That is a different trip entirely - then you are living here, not visiting, and Canggu is usually the base.

Why distances decide this

Bali looks small on a map and drives enormous. Canggu to Uluwatu or to Ubud can be 60-90 minutes each way in traffic, and there is no fast road across the south. So the real question is not "how many days" but "how many bases" - every move costs you the better part of a day. Trips feel rushed not because Bali lacks things to do, but because people underestimate transfer time and try to see all of it.

The itineraries that work

5 days: pick one region (Canggu for work-and-social, Uluwatu for surf-and-cliffs) and go deep, one day-trip maximum. 7-10 days: a beach base plus 2-3 nights in Ubud - the split most first-timers are happiest with (Canggu or Uluwatu, is Ubud worth it). 2 weeks: add the Bukit properly, or a couple of nights on Nusa Penida or the Gilis. Longer than that and you stop planning days and start building a routine.

If you are coming to stay

A month or a season changes everything: you want a single base with real infrastructure - gyms, coworking, recovery, cafes that take laptops - and you day-trip from there. That is Canggu's whole pitch (our Canggu guides). At that length, do not over-schedule the first week; the island rewards a slow ramp. Whatever your length, build in recovery days - the heat, the scooter, and the surf add up (Canggu recovery guide).
