Is Ubud worth visiting?
Who loves Ubud
People who come for yoga and stretching, quiet mornings, nature walks, and long unhurried meals. The yoga scene is genuinely deep (our Ubud yoga guide), the spas run from cheap-and-brilliant to serious destination wellness (Ubud spa guide), and the food punches far above a town this size. The Campuhan Ridge at dawn, a river-valley villa, a massage after - that is Ubud at its best, and it is very good.
Who gets bored or frustrated
Beach people and night owls. There is no coast - the nearest proper beaches are 60-90 minutes away - and evenings wind down early. Central Ubud around the market and Monkey Forest Road is also genuinely over-touristed and traffic-clogged; if that is all you see, you will leave underwhelmed. The town has a real "influencer trap" layer sitting right next to the authentic one.
How to get the good version
Stay slightly out - Penestanan, Nyuh Kuning, Sayan, or up toward Tegallalang - not on the main market drag. Do the ridge walks and rice terraces early, before the tour buses. Treat it as a slow-down leg of a wider trip rather than the whole thing: a few days in Ubud paired with a beach base like Canggu or Uluwatu is the itinerary most people are happiest with (see Canggu or Uluwatu and how many days in Bali).
