Where should I stay in Bali for the first time?

Short answerSplit the trip: 4-5 nights on the south-west coast plus 3-4 nights in Ubud. For the coast leg, pick by personality - Seminyak if you want walkable, central and easy; Canggu if you want cafes, gyms and a younger crowd; Sanur if you want calm water and quiet. Ubud is not a day trip - rice terraces, temples and waterfalls deserve their own base.

The one-paragraph map

Bali's areas are more different than most first-timers expect. Seminyak: beach clubs, shopping, short airport transfer, the most forgiving base (Torn Tackies' first-timer guide reaches the same verdict). Canggu: surf, laptops, fitness, nightlife - our home turf, covered in detail in our Canggu guides. Sanur and Nusa Dua: calm swimmable water, families, older travellers. Ubud: jungle, culture, yoga, no beach. Uluwatu: cliffs and serious surf (see Canggu or Uluwatu?).

Why the split-stay works

The coast and Ubud are only 1-1.5 hours apart, but they are different holidays: one is ocean and sunsets, the other is ridge walks, temples and a cooler, greener valley. Doing Ubud as a rushed day trip from the coast means spending three of its highlights' hours in a car. Nearly every guide that locals respect lands on the same 4-5 plus 3-4 night structure (bali.com area guide).

Honest caveats

There is no "best area" - there is a best area for your trip, and travellers who hate traffic should weight Sanur and Ubud up and Canggu down. If you have only 4-5 nights total, skip the split and stay in one place; changing hotels eats half a day each time. And book the first two nights before you land, then decide the rest once you have felt the island - Bali rewards flexibility.
