Seminyak or Ubud: which should I stay in?

Short answerIf you can only pick one, pick Seminyak for beach days, sunsets, restaurants and walkable convenience, and Ubud for green quiet, culture, yoga and spa time. They sit 60 to 90 minutes apart and deliver genuinely different holidays, so on any trip of a week or more the honest answer is both: roughly 4 to 5 nights on the coast plus 3 to 4 in Ubud. First trip, short, and forced to choose one base? Seminyak is the safer default because it gives you beach plus city comforts in one place.

What Seminyak wins

Convenience you can walk to. One strip holds boutique shopping, the island's densest run of good restaurants, spas and sunset beach clubs, and it is the closest of the popular bases to the airport (Finns, Bali Holiday Secrets). What Ubud wins

Green, quiet and depth. Rice terraces, river valleys, temples, a serious yoga and retreat scene and spas that run from cheap and brilliant to destination-grade (Ubud yoga, Ubud spas). Evenings are early and calm, the air is cooler, and villas tend to be more space for the money (Roavara). The trade-offs are just as clear: no coast at all, the nearest proper beach is over an hour away, and the centre around the market is genuinely over-touristed and traffic-clogged.

The tie-breakers, honestly

Under 5 nights total: pick one base, because each move eats half a day. Honeymoon: split, coast first then Ubud, since Ubud is the better slow-down finish. Travelling with young kids: Seminyak, for pools, beach and short distances. Coming for yoga, retreats or a cooking course: Ubud, no contest (is Ubud worth visiting).
