How we rank: the method, the checks and who writes this
What this page is: the rules behind every "best of" list on this site, in enough detail that you can check our work. Each rule below exists because a guide we read (sometimes our own) got something wrong: a closed venue still ranked, a price copied from another article, a star rating nobody had verified.
What a place on the list means
A venue is on a list because it is open, findable and, in the editor's judgement, among the ten best answers to the question in the title. Nothing else. There is no paid placement, no "featured" slot and no affiliate link. Booking partners pay a commission only on completed bookings made through the Book button on their card, are labelled on the card, and get no change in position for it. Venues cannot see a draft or ask for a position. The two venues in which the editor has a business interest are labelled "our studio" wherever they appear and are kept out of the ranked list and its structured data; that rule is enforced by a script before every publish. Venue owners: what this means for you, and the badge for listed venues, is on For businesses.
How a venue gets in
- Candidates. For each question (for example "best coworking in Canggu") we collect every venue named in the search results, in two or three dated 2026 guides, on Google Maps for the area, and in recent Reddit threads. A typical long list has 20 to 40 names.
- Existence. A candidate must have a live website or a published address we can place on a map. We fetch the site ourselves; a 404, a lapsed domain or a closure banner removes the venue. "Appears in a 2026 article" is not evidence of being open: three of the most-recommended Canggu coworking spaces have been closed for between one and four years.
- Price. We take the price only from the venue's own rate card, menu or booking page and date it on the card. No published price means "n/a", never a figure borrowed from another guide. 73% of cards carry such a price today.
- Rating. Shown only when verified at the source on a stated date. 283 of 303 cards currently say "n/a", and that is deliberate.
- Order. The editor ranks the shortlist by fit to the question, value for the price, and what a visitor finds on arrival (hours, access, whether a day pass or a drop-in exists). Pros and minuses on each card say why; an "Editor's pick" is one venue per list and is explained in its text.
How we keep it true
- Weekly, by script.
venue-healthfetches the website of all 205 ranked venues that have one, with a browser user agent, and flags a 404 or 410, a domain that no longer resolves, or closure wording on the page. A flag is a reason to look, not a verdict: BWork Bali lost bworkbali.com but trades at bwork.id. - Quarterly, by a person. Every ranking is read against two or three guides that carry an update date and against the venues' own pages. The sweep of 16 October 2026 covered all 32 rankings and found two closed venues in our own Canggu coworking list, one hijacked domain and three venues whose website had moved.
- Dated on the card. Each venue card shows when its website last answered our script, or, for venues without a website, when a person last checked the listing. A note under every ranking gives the counts for that page.
- Closures in the open. Anything confirmed closed, paused or moved goes to the Closed in Bali tracker with the date, the evidence, who still lists it and the venue we would send you to instead. The tracker includes our own mistakes.
- Prices in one place. Every price we publish, with its date and source, is on the Bali Wellness Price Index and in a downloadable CSV, so anyone can check or reuse the numbers.
What we got wrong so far
Until 16 October 2026 our Canggu coworking ranking held Dojo Bali at number three and Outpost Canggu at number five. Dojo closed in December 2022 and its own site says so; Outpost's coworking floor closed in April 2024. Our July check had fetched the domains, seen a 200 response and a normal page title, and stopped there. The fix was the quarterly human read described above, the dated cards, and the tracker. In the same sweep we corrected a day-pass price we had taken from a guide (150k) to the one the venue publishes (299k). Corrections are made on the page with the date and are not silently overwritten.
Frequently asked
Can a venue pay to be on The Ten List?
No. There is no paid placement, no sponsored slot and no affiliate commission on any ranking. The two venues in which our editor has a business interest carry an "our studio" label wherever they appear and are never counted inside a ranked list.
Where do the prices come from?
Only from the venue's own rate card, menu or booking page, with the date we read it. If a venue does not publish a price we write "n/a" rather than copy a number from another guide. In October 2026 that rule changed a headline figure: BWork Bali, which we had at 150k from a July guide, publishes 299k on bwork.id.
How do you know a place is still open?
Two layers. A script fetches the website of every ranked venue each week and flags a 404 or 410, a domain that no longer resolves, or closure wording on the page. Once a quarter a person reads each ranking against two or three dated 2026 guides and the venues' own pages. Each card shows the date of its last check, and anything closed, paused or moved goes to the Closed in Bali tracker.
Why is the rating "n/a" on so many cards?
We show a rating only when we have verified the figure at the source on a stated date. Copying a star count from a search result without a date would look complete and be wrong a month later. "n/a" is the honest state of our research for that venue.
What happens when you get something wrong?
We fix the page, date the correction and keep the mistake visible. Our Canggu coworking ranking listed Dojo Bali (closed December 2022) and Outpost Canggu (coworking closed April 2024) until 16 October 2026; both are now on the Closed in Bali tracker with the dates, and the ranking says so. Send corrections to info@thetenlist.com.
