Do you need a private driver in Bali?

Short answerNot for everyday life inside one area - Grab and Gojek cover that for a couple of dollars a ride. A private driver earns its place the moment a day has three or more stops spread across the island: temples, waterfalls, the east coast, or Ubud from the coast. In 2026 a full day of 8 to 10 hours with car, fuel, parking and driver runs roughly 600,000 to 900,000 IDR, about 40 to 60 USD, which split between three or four people beats stacking app rides on both cost and sanity.

When it pays, and when it does not

It pays for day trips with multiple stops, for airport runs with luggage, for families with small children, and on rainy days when scooters stop being fun. It also solves the ride-app dead zones: local transport cooperatives around Ubud and some beaches block app pickups on their turf, so a car that waits for you is worth more than a cheaper ride you cannot get (Grab or Gojek in Bali). It does not pay for hopping between cafes in Canggu, or for a single point-to-point transfer where an app car costs a fraction of a day rate.

What the price does and does not include

Published 2026 rates cluster at 600,000 to 900,000 IDR for 8 to 10 hours, normally including the car, fuel, parking and the driver himself (Salt in our Hair, Bali Belin). Not included: entrance tickets, your meals, tolls on some routes, and overtime beyond the agreed hours, which is usually charged per hour. Long north or east Bali routes are quoted higher, and that is fair rather than a markup. Agree the route, the hours and the price in writing before the day starts, and tip 50,000 to 100,000 IDR for a good full day (how much to tip in Bali). Buying the driver lunch is a courtesy many travellers extend, not an obligation.

How to pick one, honestly

The good ones are found through your hotel or villa, or a personal recommendation, and are booked by WhatsApp with the route confirmed the day before. Ask two questions when booking: how much English they are comfortable with, since fluency varies widely even though basic tourism English is common (do they speak English in Bali), and whether the itinerary can change on the day, since the best drivers reroute around crowds and rain.
