Is Ubud worth visiting?
What Ubud has, counted from our seven Ubud rankings
We rank 70 Ubud venues across seven categories. The numbers say who Ubud is for better than any adjective:
- Yoga: 10 studios, drop-in 50k (Ashram Munivara in Tegallalang) to 185k (Ubud Yoga House); The Yoga Barn and Radiantly Alive at 180k; Alchemy sells passes (5 classes 700k).
- Spa: 10, from 240k for a 60-minute Balinese at Karsa Spa past the Campuhan ridge to 2.1m for an hour at COMO Shambhala and 3.1m for 75 minutes at Sacred River.
- Cooking classes: 10 of 10 publish a price, 350k-600k for a standard class (Subak prices in US dollars), most with a market visit and a village compound.
- Gyms: 10, day pass 150k (Ubud Fitness Centre in Peliatan) to 350k (Bali Eden in Mas); Ubud.Fitness 275k, Titi Batu club 310k with the gym, sauna and cold plunge.
- Healthy cafes: breakfast 79k-130k at the ones that publish (Zest, Alchemy, Watercress), mains 69k-110k at Seeds of Life.
- Massage and retreats: 10 each, retreats mostly priced per programme rather than per day.
Where they sit: Central Ubud 17, Tegallalang 4, Lodtunduh 3, Mas 3, Peliatan 3, Penestanan 3. If none of those seven categories is the reason you travel, Ubud is a day trip from the coast, not a base. If two or more are, it is the base.

Who loves Ubud
People who come for yoga and stretching, quiet mornings, nature walks, and long unhurried meals. The yoga scene is genuinely deep (our Ubud yoga guide), the spas run from cheap-and-brilliant to serious destination wellness (Ubud spa guide), and the food punches far above a town this size. The Campuhan Ridge at dawn, a river-valley villa, a massage after - that is Ubud at its best, and it is very good.
Who gets bored or frustrated
Beach people and night owls. There is no coast - the nearest proper beaches are 60-90 minutes away - and evenings wind down early. Central Ubud around the market and Monkey Forest Road is also genuinely over-touristed and traffic-clogged; if that is all you see, you will leave underwhelmed. The town has a real "influencer trap" layer sitting right next to the authentic one.
How to get the good version
Stay slightly out - Penestanan, Nyuh Kuning, Sayan, or up toward Tegallalang - not on the main market drag. Do the ridge walks and rice terraces early, before the tour buses. Treat it as a slow-down leg of a wider trip rather than the whole thing: a few days in Ubud paired with a beach base like Canggu or Uluwatu is the itinerary most people are happiest with (see Canggu or Uluwatu and how many days in Bali).
