What happens on Nyepi in Bali?

Short answerFor 24 hours the entire island stops. Ngurah Rai airport closes, no cars or scooters move, shops and restaurants shut, lights stay low after dark, and everyone including tourists remains inside their accommodation. The next Nyepi is Monday 8 March 2027, with the Ogoh-Ogoh parades the evening before. Hotels stay open and feed their guests, so the day is calm rather than difficult - as long as you are not trying to fly, drive or shop.

What is actually forbidden

Nyepi is the Balinese new year, observed through four restraints: no fire or light, no work, no travel, and no entertainment. In practice that means streets empty of vehicles, closed businesses, curtains drawn after sunset, and no beach or street access even for visitors. Village wardens called pecalang keep the peace and will send you back inside if you wander out. The airport closes for roughly 24 hours, from about 6am on Nyepi to 6am the next day, with no arrivals or departures (bali.com, Go Bali Go). Mobile data has been restricted island-wide in some recent years while hotel wifi generally stayed on, so treat connectivity as uncertain and confirm with your property rather than assuming.

What it is like as a visitor

Better than it sounds. Hotels and staffed villas serve meals as normal, just quietly and with lights dimmed after dark; whether you can use the pool is set property by property. With no traffic and no light pollution, the island gets an extraordinary silence and, on a clear night, the best stars you will ever see over Bali. The evening before is the opposite: Ogoh-Ogoh parades, giant demon effigies carried through every village and burned, which is one of the great free spectacles in Southeast Asia. How to plan around it

Do not book a flight on the date, and do not book one for the morning after either if you can help it, since the backlog is real. Arrive at least a day or two before or leave the day after (Viceroy Bali). If you are in an unstaffed villa, buy food, water and a couple of books the day before, because nothing will be open and delivery apps do not run.
