Can you swim in the sea in Bali?

Short answerYes, but the beach you choose decides the answer. Bali's famous west-coast strip - Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Echo - is a surf coast with genuine rip currents, safe for swimming only between the red and yellow lifeguard flags. For calm, easy swimming go to Sanur, Nusa Dua or Jimbaran Bay on the east and south, or Pemuteran in the north west. A few beaches, including Padang Padang, Bingin, Uluwatu and Dreamland, are for surfing and looking at rather than casual swimming.

Patrolled Bali beaches fly a standard set: red and yellow together marks the supervised swimming zone, yellow means caution, and a single red flag means stay out of the water entirely. Rip currents are the actual danger here - channels roughly 10 to 30 metres wide pulling seaward faster than most people can swim (My Bali Trips, In Da Surf). If one takes you, do not fight it: float, do not panic, swim parallel to the beach until the pull stops, then angle back in. Where to swim, where to surf

Calm and swimmable: Sanur, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran Bay, and the reef-protected north west around Pemuteran. Surf beaches you can swim at carefully, inside the flags, on a small day: Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Berawa and Batu Bolong. Not for swimming: Padang Padang, Bingin, Uluwatu, Dreamland and Tanah Lot, where shallow reef, shore break and rocks do the damage rather than the current. Water quality and the rainy season

The honest caveat: from December to February, heavy rain flushes river mouths and drains onto the west-coast beaches, and the seasonal current pushes marine plastic ashore around Kuta and Seminyak (when is rainy season in Bali). We have no verified water-quality testing data to publish, so any number on bacteria counts here would be invented, and it stays n/a. The practical rule locals use: do not swim right after a big downpour, avoid river-mouth outflows, keep water out of your mouth, and rinse afterwards.
