How much is a massage in Ubud?
The ten Ubud venues behind the number
Every figure on this page comes from a venue we rank on the best massages in Ubud. Prices are the venue's own published rate for the entry-level full-body massage; "++" or a percentage means tax and service are added on top.
| Venue (area) | 60 minutes | 90 minutes or package | Tax and service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cantika Zest (Penestanan) | 200k | n/a | +10% |
| Karsa Spa (Bangkiang Sidem) | 240k Balinese; 260k deep tissue; 280k shiatsu | 350k Balinese; 380k deep tissue; 450k Thai yoga | +15% |
| Ubud Traditional Spa (Kedewatan) | from 260k | n/a | as quoted |
| Ubud Bodyworks Centre (Jl. Hanoman) | 265,500 | n/a | as quoted |
| Hesa Wellness Spa (central) | from 300k | 3-hour rituals 1.2m | +10% |
| Bali Botanica (Sanggingan) | from 325k | Ayurvedic treatments priced separately | as quoted |
| Sang Spa (Jl. Jembawan) | from 359k | 90 min from 689k; 2-hour rituals from 499k++; 4-hour from 1.299m++ | ++ |
| Taksu Spa (Goutama Selatan) | from 500k | n/a | as quoted |
| INKA Spa (Monkey Forest Rd) | from 500k | n/a | as quoted |
| Jaens Spa (Pengosekan) | n/a | 90 min from 635k; signature from 855k | as quoted |
Median for a plain 60-minute massage across the eight venues that publish one: about 290,000 IDR before tax. That is the number to carry in your head; a quote far below it is a different product, a quote far above it is buying the building, not the hands.

The three price floors, and what you get on each
Ubud's massage market is not one market. It is three, stacked on top of each other in the same square kilometre, and the price tells you which one you are standing in.
Floor one, 200,000-280,000 IDR: village rooms and local healing houses. Cantika Zest in Penestanan, Karsa above the Campuhan ridge, Ubud Traditional Spa out in Kedewatan, Ubud Bodyworks on Jl. Hanoman. Simple rooms, sometimes dated decor, and the strongest hands-per-rupiah on the island. Karsa is the only venue in our whole Ubud research that publishes a complete menu by technique, which is why it is our pick: you know before you walk in that deep tissue is 260,000, shiatsu 280,000 and a 90-minute Thai yoga session 450,000.
Floor two, 300,000-400,000: the mid-range spas with a proper reception, showers, flower baths on the menu and a warm-up circuit at Hesa (steam, hot and cold pools). Sang Spa's "from 359,000" hour sits here, and so does Bali Botanica's Ayurvedic menu at 325,000.
Floor three, 500,000 and up: the designer compounds. Taksu and INKA start the hour at 500,000; Jaens does not even list a plain hour and opens at a 90-minute session from 635,000. You are paying for the garden, the stream, the late opening (INKA and Sang are the latest verified closers on our list, 10pm) and a more clinical menu: myofascial release, pulse-point work, lymphatic resets.
None of the three is a trick. The point is to choose the floor on purpose: a tired back after a ridge walk is a 260,000 problem; an anniversary evening is a 1,299,000 one.
What moves the price, in order of size
- Duration. Ninety minutes is rarely 1.5 times the hour; at Karsa it is 350,000 against 240,000 (1.46x), at Sang 689,000 against 359,000 (1.9x). Two-hour "rituals" bundle a scrub or flower bath and start around 499,000++ at Sang; four-hour packages run to 1.3 million.
- Tax and service. "++" on a Balinese menu means government tax plus service, usually 15-21 percent combined. Karsa states 15 percent, Cantika Zest and Hesa 10 percent, Sang uses ++. A 500,000 treatment is a 575,000-605,000 bill. Ask before, not after.
- Technique. Balinese (long strokes, oil) is the entry price everywhere. Deep tissue, shiatsu, Thai yoga and anything Ayurvedic cost 10-40 percent more at the same venue because the therapist is trained for it and the session is slower.
- Location. Walkable central Ubud (Monkey Forest Road, Hanoman, Jembawan) is 50,000-100,000 more for the same hour than Penestanan or Kedewatan. Ubud Traditional Spa offsets its out-of-town address with complimentary transport, which is worth about a 100,000 round trip by Grab car.
- Season. Published prices do not change with the calendar, but availability does: in July, August and the Christmas fortnight the mid-range spas fill by afternoon and the walk-in option is the one with the empty room, not the one you wanted. Sang says plainly that reservations are recommended.
Is a package worth it?
Sometimes, and the arithmetic is simple. Sang's 2-hour ritual (massage, scrub, flower bath, shower) from 499,000++ costs about what a 90-minute massage alone does, so if you wanted the scrub anyway it is close to free. Hesa's 3-hour rituals at 1.2 million plus 10 percent are a different proposition: that is four or five village-tier hours of massage for one afternoon of contrast pools and treatments, and it only makes sense if the afternoon is the point.
The honest rule: a package is worth it when it bundles something you would have booked separately at the same place. It is not worth it as a way to "get a better massage"; the hands in the 2-hour room are the same hands as in the 1-hour room.
Not for
Three readers should skip the cheapest floor. If you have an acute injury, a 200,000 room with a general therapist is the wrong tool; go to Taksu or Ubud Bodyworks, whose menus are written for intervention rather than relaxation. If you need an evening slot after 8pm, most floor-one houses are closed; Sang and INKA run to 10pm. And if you are travelling as a couple who wants the flower-bath ceremony, the village rooms do not offer it and will not pretend to.
Conversely, if your budget for the whole trip is tight, nothing on floor three gives you a better back than Karsa or Ubud Traditional Spa; it gives you a better room.
How to pay, and what to tip
Cards are accepted at every venue on our list except where we note cash; the spa floors above 300,000 all take Visa and Mastercard. Deposits are not the norm for a single massage, though some Ubud spas ask for one on packages. Tips are not included in the ++ service charge in practice: 20,000-50,000 IDR handed to the therapist is the Ubud standard for an hour, and we wrote the full breakdown in how much to tip in Bali.
One last calibration. If Ubud looks expensive after this page, compare it with the coast: the Canggu spas we rank cluster at 250,000-300,000 for the hour, Seminyak's Jari Menari opens at 515,000 for 75 minutes, and a Kuta tourist-strip hour at Taman Air Spa is 195,000. Ubud's floor one is the cheapest good massage on the island; its floor three is priced exactly like Seminyak's.
