What Ubud actually wins
Range and depth. Ubud is called Bali's yoga capital for a reason that is still true: The Yoga Barn alone runs seven studios and up to 20 classes a day on a jungle campus with its own rooms and restaurant, and the town around it holds the practices you cannot find on the coast. Spacious Yoga runs a proper Mysore Ashtanga program, 6:30 to 9:30 every morning except Saturdays and moon days, with a one-week minimum for beginners; Intuitive Flow teaches Yoga Pranala, Balinese energy work woven into Hatha, to eight or fewer people above the Penestanan steps; Alchemy teaches a tantra-rooted curriculum organised around the elements; Ubud Yoga Centre is the only heated room on the island. Below that sit the ashrams, Taman Hati's 6am Kundalini at 100,000 and Munivara in Tegallalang at 50,000, and above it the retreats, from 6.79 million for three days at the Barn.
The trade-off is scale. Peak classes at the Barn hold 40-60 mats and Radiantly Alive's marquee vinyasa can reach 70, so the famous rooms are the least intimate in Bali at the famous hours. The intimate rooms (Taksu often under five, Intuitive Flow, Ubud Yoga House capped at 23) are the ones to book, and two of the three are a walk, not a scooter-to-door.
What Canggu actually wins
A practice that fits into a day that has other things in it. Canggu's studios are newer, smaller and sit next to the surf, the gyms and the recovery houses: The Path in Pererenan has a sauna-and-plunge wing on the same campus and sells a 10-yoga-plus-10-recovery bundle at 2.25 million; Surf & Yoga Canggu pairs a shala with a surf program; Udara, twenty minutes north, has aerial yoga, sound domes and hot-and-cold pools under one roof. The Google scores are the highest on either list, Adda at 4.9 across 937 reviews, and the price band is tight and published, 150,000-165,000 with KITAS and local rates printed on the site rather than asked for at the desk.
The trade-off is depth. No Mysore program, no ashram, no heated room, fewer lineage teachers; four of the ten studios on our Canggu list publish no price at all and run on Instagram, and the traditional pace at The Practice and Samadi is the exception, not the rule. If you want to go deep for a month, Canggu's studios will carry you; if you want to go somewhere nobody on the coast teaches, that is an Ubud trip.
Prices, honestly, are a draw
The number most people want is the drop-in, and it is the same in both towns: 165,000 at the Ubud anchors (Yoga Barn, Radiantly Alive, Alchemy) against 150,000-165,000 at the Canggu anchors. Where the towns differ is at the edges. Ubud's floor is lower and stranger: a 50,000 ashram class, 100,000 Kundalini at dawn, 110,000 cash at Intuitive Flow with a forest view. Canggu's floor is Pranava's 110,000 inside a gym. Ubud's ceiling is higher: 185,000 at Ubud Yoga House and 250,000 a class for Mysore. For a month, the published unlimited passes are a Canggu strength, 2.0 million at Adda and 2.2 million at The Path against Radiantly Alive's pass as Ubud's value play. For a resident with a KITAS, the Barn's 100,000 and Pranava's 100,000 tie; see the full Canggu price table for the packs.
The honest tie-breakers
Yoga is the reason for the trip, or you want a retreat, teacher training, Ashtanga, Kundalini or a lineage you have read about: Ubud, and pick the small rooms over the famous ones for the daily class. Yoga is the morning before surf, work or a gym session: Canggu, and put The Path or Adda within a scooter ride of your bed. First trip, undecided, two weeks: four or five nights on the coast and three or four in Ubud is the split we recommend on where to stay in Bali, and it gives you a week of each town's yoga without pretending they are interchangeable. Travelling with someone who does not practise: Canggu, where the other person has a beach, a cafe and a gym while you are on the mat; Ubud's non-yoga day is temples and traffic.
Not for
Do not pick Ubud for yoga if your practice needs heat and speed: the one heated room is in Nyuh Kuning and the rest of the town teaches at a traditional pace. Do not pick Canggu if you want a quiet room at a famous studio at 8am; the shalas are smaller than Ubud's but Batu Bolong fills, and The Practice asks you to arrive 20 minutes early for exactly that reason. And do not try to do both towns daily: the 60-90 minute drive each way turns a 75-minute class into a four-hour errand, which is the single most common mistake in first-timers' itineraries.
